New York Mets

Although the New York Yankees may stand out at the baseball team of New York, another major league baseball team franchise is the New York Mets. The New York Mets call the borough of Queens, New York their home. The New York Mets are members of the East Division, and the National League of Major League Baseball. They have won only two World Series championships in their tenure: one in 1969 against the Baltimore Orioles, and the other in 1986 against the Boston Red Sox.

The New York Mets are often referred to as the bastard stepchild of the New York Yankees. Whereas the New York Yankees are known as the most successful franchise in baseball history, the New York Mets hold some of the most unsuccessful records. The New York Mets are among the teams having lost the most games in a season. In 1969, the New York Mets became the team third worst team in this regard, with a season score of 40 to 120. Only two major league baseball teams have lost more games in a single season: the Cleveland Spiders in 1989 and the Detroit Tigers in 2003.

The New York Mets, like the New York Yankees, are building a new baseball stadium to call home. The New York Mets, who currently play at Shea Stadium, will be playing at a new stadium in the coming years. Named Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets is slated to be ready in 2009. However, the history between the New York Mets and Shea Stadium should not be forgotten. This is especially true of Jim Bunning, a New York Mets pitcher who was the only player to ever pitch a perfect game in the history of Shea Stadium.

The New York Mets can boast several famous players. Nolan Ryan and Darryl Strawberry are among them. Nolan Ryan played a record-tying 27 baseball seasons for several teams, including the New York Mets, and holds several of baseball’s pitching records. He was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. Today Darryl Strawberry remains the New York Mets’ player with the all-time most home runs and runs batted in.

The New York Mets are not the best baseball team in Major League Baseball, but they are a definitely part of New York that makes the state what it is. In their 46 year history they have only won two championships. However, New York Mets fans are hardly seasonal, and will stand by their team rain or shine. This is something that a winning team, like the New York Yankees, can’t always attest to.
