If you are an avid football fan and plan to visit New York, you can’t miss out on an opportunity to see the New York Giants in a home football game. The funny thing is that the New York Giants aren’t actually based in New York, but very close too it. The New York Giants are headquartered in East Rutherford, New Jersey. If planning to attend, games can be seen during the fall and winter months; however if you are traveling to New York during the summer months, you can witness the New York Giants training and playing preseason football games instead. Regardless of what the New York Giants are doing, it will be in the same location: all training and home games take place in the Meadowlands Sports Complex, known as Giants Stadium.
The New York Giants were founded in 1925, and of the five teams that joined the National Football League that year they are the only team that still remains. The New York Giants are members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference. They have won 14 divisional championships and 9 conference championships. Regarding National Football League titles, the New York Giants hold six: four before the Super Bowl era, and two after. The New York Giants earned NFL titles in 1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956; and when the Super Bowl was established in 1967, the New York Giants won championship games for the 1986 and 1990 footballs seasons. The New York Giants also boast 15 players in the Hall of Fame.
Coincidently, the New York Giants was a name for both a football team and a baseball team. Today the New York Giants baseball team is known as the San Francisco Giants, and has been known by that name since 1957. However, while the two teams shared the same hometown, the New York Giants football team was called New York Football Giants to distinguish between the two sports teams. This name became the official team name and, in fact, the New York Football Giants is still the team’s legal corporate name.
Today the New York Giants’ roster features some prominent names in the National Football League. Eli Manning, quarterback, is among them. The number one draft pick in 2004, Eli Manning was initially selected by the San Diego Chargers. However, he refused to play for the team and was later picked up by the New York Giants where he is the team’s starting quarterback. Jeremy Shockey is another prominent player. As a first round draft pick in 2002, Shockey is a starting tight end for the New York Giants. He was the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year in 2002, and has been elected to play in the Pro Bowl four years in a row. With players like these, the New York Giants have easily made it to the playoffs every year and are a definite sight to see if visiting New York.
