About New York
New York is a beautiful state filled with the most beautiful and well-known sights of the United States. It is the country’s third most populous state and its most populous city, New York City, is the largest city in the country. The state borders two Great Lakes, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. For this reason the weather is humid during the summer and wicked cold during the winter, but the livelihood of New York makes it easy to forget about the weather.
New York has a culture about it that is second to none. Its attractions are just as diverse as its people. There are Broadway shows and musicals to watch, and concerts in Central Park. There are nightclubs and dancehalls, pubs and bars on every street corner. New York also hosts some of the greatest tourist sights, such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and Ellis Island. And if that isn’t enough, the state also has over 180,000 restaurants, 150 different museums, and more retail shopping locations than you could visit in a year. Don’t forget New York’s subways station: with over 840 miles of subway tracks, one could ride all day just for fun!
New York also holds a special historical beauty. New York has attracted many immigrants worldwide. For this reason, New York is known as an immigration gateway. Many Italians, Irish, and Africans immigrated here during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is estimated that today over 20% of New York’s population is foreign born. Such immigration gives New York not only its colorful diversity, but part of its most notable history as well. New York is home to the former Five Points district (now known as Foley Square) which was a slum known as the original melting pot of newly-arrived Irish and emancipated African Americans in 1820-40’s. The two groups were notorious enemies and often fought in that exact location. When renovated, the site revealed an 18th Century African Burial Ground, now preserved as a National Monument, as well as hundreds of artifacts from the gang wars that took place there. Martin Scorsese’s film, The Gangs of New York, was filmed in this very location.
Finally, New York is home to six major sports teams: the New York Giants (football), the New York Jets (football), the New York Knicks (basketball), the New York Nets (basketball), the New York Yankees (baseball) and the New York Mets (baseball). Regardless of what team you prefer, there are sports available to watch any time of the year. And regardless of what the weather is like, or what sort of company your with, you and your friends will always find something of interest in beautiful New York.
